Title

Biometric Characteristics of Sarotherodon galilaeus from Three Man-Made Lakes in Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria

Abstract

Samples of Sarotherodon galilaeus collected between August, 2012 and December, 2012 from Ado-Ekiti, Egbe and Ero, Ekiti State, Sou-thwest, Nigeria, man- made lakes were examined for their morpho-metric and meristic characteristics .The mean body weight of S. gal-ilaeus range from 16.00±1.23g in Ero and 145.86±10.80 g in Ado-Ekiti. The total length ranged from 10.19± 1.36 cm and 21.29±3.27 cm. The relationship between the weight and total length showed that Y= -1.8121+ 2.9716X, Y= -1.8369+3.0948X, and Y= -0.1229+ 1.3054X for Ado-Ekiti, Egbe and Ero dam respectively. The regressi-on coefficient (r) are r =0.9290, 0.9189 and 0.5659 for Ado- Ekiti, Egbe and Ero S. galilaeus population respectively. The condition factor (K) recorded are 1.51, 1.61 and 1.51 for Ado-Ekiti, Egbe and Ero dam species respe-ctively. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is important to introduce sanctions for incessant interfere-nce of the host communit-ies to avoid over exploitation of the native fishes of the three man-made lakes.
